Shopping for Refurbished Desktop Computers
Refurbished desktop computers are computers that have been renovated or renewed in some way. It is also another way of saying a used or second hand desktop computer. If you are a shrewd shopper and know how to evaluate refurbished desktop computers then you should be able to find a good one for yourself. However if your knowledge about computers is not the best then you might be well advised to enlist the help of a more educated computer shopper to help you look.
There is an art to searching for refurbished desktop computers. Many people choose to go this route because it is cheaper and there are plenty of used computers that still have lots of life left in them. For example, a refurbished computer that was $2,000 when it was purchased brand new might turn out to be of more value to you than a new computer that costs $1,000 or less.
When searching for a refurbished desktop computer you need to know what to look for in order to determine if it is a good computer and worth your money or not. First of all when looking at a refurbished desktop computer find out what hardware comes with it, if any at all. Hardware would include such things as a keyboard, monitor, mouse, speakers, microphone, and in some cases even a printer. If you need certain pieces of hardware and not others then find out if the seller is willing to sell you just what you want. For example, perhaps you have a monitor and a mouse and you just need a keyboard, speakers and a printer.
The hardware that is inside the refurbished computer is also important as well. For example does the computer come with a video card, a sound card, a CD-Rom drive and a modem? Also find out if it contains SIMM or DIMM (RAM) sockets and if so how many there are and how many are in use. These are all important things to know.
You already know it is a refurbished computer but that does not mean exactly the same thing to everyone. Inquire of the seller how many of the parts of the computer have been replaced or repaired over the life of the computer. If major components of the computer have been replaced this can actually add to the computer’s longevity as opposed to detracting from it.
If you think you might want to upgrade the desktop in the future then find out if that is a possibility. Find out if more RAM can be added and if the processor can be upgraded. You should also look to see if the computer contains expansion slots for a variety of different kinds of cards.
Whatever you do, do not purchase a refurbished computer until you have tried it out for yourself to ensure that it is in working order. You test drive a car before you buy it so why not a computer!
