If none of the simple checks and tests above cure the problem of no sound on your computer and the others just sound too technical or complex then it may be that the final one on the list is the next thing you should carry out next.

A system restore will restore all of your computer settings to a point in time where they were working properly before you encountered this problem. What’s more the process can be completely revered if needs be.

Here’s what you need to do.

1. Boot up your computer
2. Log into your Windows Administrator Account
3. Click Start/All Programmes/Accessories/System Tools
4. In System Tools click on System Restore which will take you to the Welcome to System Restore page
5. Next select Restore my computer to an earlier time and click Next.
6. When you are asked to Select a Restore Point choose a time when the computer had sound and the sound system was working correctly and then click Next.
7. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next.
8. System Restore will now go ahead and restore the previous Windows configuration for you and it will then restart your computer.

Now check to see if there is sound on your computer once again. If not you can try a different restore point to restore the computer back to.

They are usually just a set of two pillar-like speakers aren’t very big. These will usually put out more sound than you might expect. I would recommend getting a set that comes with a small subwoofer. It might seem silly to get a subwoofer so small, but it will actually do wonders for your sound. After you get the speakers, make sure you set them to your own listening style. If you think the subwoofer puts out too much bass, you can actually change that. These speakers will usually let you configure them manually by way of dials on the speakers. You can change the audio levels through equalizers on your electronics as well. If you do that you should remember to change them back when you are using headphones.

They call them computer speakers for a reason. It’s nice to be able to listen to things on your computer with good sound. You might find yourself getting more of your entertainment from your computer if the sound comes out well enough.

So, the next time you are at the store and you see a great deal on computer speakers, don’t think to yourself that your computer already has speakers attached to it. These speakers will be a lot better than those.

A customer of mine who has a computer which is only about a year and a half old told me he was having problems with his computer. When I asked what the trouble with his computer was, he told me it had become aggravating. I asked him how the computer had become aggravating and he said, well, it’s slow and aggravating.

Then he asked me if I might be able to fix his computer. Actually, I did better than that. I told him how he could try to fix his computer and if it worked it would save him a lot of money. In this article I will tell you what I told him.

Parasites Are Aggravating

Any computer that is not acting properly is an aggravating computer. Generally speaking aggravating computer problems are not caused by parts going bad inside the PC. Usually, these problems happen when the Windows operating system is damaged in some way.

One way a Windows operating system can become damaged is by spyware or viruses. Spyware and viruses, or parasites as they are also known, survive by using many of the resources your Windows operating system and your computer supply.

Since this guy with the aggravating computer had an anti-spyware program protecting him against all of the known strains of viruses and spyware that could be causing him problems, we eliminated them from being the cause of his computer’s woes.

Is The Problem in the Registry?

Next, I asked him if he was currently using a registry cleaner. At this point, he gave me a blank stare. Many people respond with blank stares when asked if their computer has a registry cleaner installed on it. This is because most people are not familiar with registry cleaners and their function as far as keeping a computer from becoming slow and aggravating.

Registry corruption can appear inside the registry section of the Windows operating system. This is true, though it is not spurred on by user activities in any way. In other words, you cannot set out to corrupt your registry by performing everyday activities on your computer and succeed in doing so. However, without realizing it, registry corruption will often start to build in the Windows registry anyway.

Taking Care of the Problem

The happy ending to this story is; I recommended a website he go to and download a registry cleaner. He did, and after a free scan, he found his registry did have corruption present. He then purchased the cleaner for far less than he would’ve paid me to fix his computer. Then, he used it to repair his registry files.

When I say he used it to repair its files, actually all he did was click a button and the registry cleaning program took care of matters automatically. The result was he was able to use his computer again without it aggravating him.

Corrupt Windows operating system registries and aggravating computers go hand-in-hand. If you have one, it is very likely you have the other. However, after you use a good registry cleaner no one can guarantee you will be living a life free of aggravation, but at least your computer won’t be adding most of the aggravation you are experiencing.

An increased number of transistors means that the processor can execute more tasks in a given amount of time – recall that supercomputers increase their efficiency by using a large number of processors at the same time. The processors work in parallel, each processor making a small contribution so that the computer can finish the computation more quickly. For the next potential advance in computing technology, researchers and computer engineers are trying to develop a computer that would use parallel processing in an unprecedented manner. This technology would employ the laws of physics that have previously been considered the archenemy of electronic computers – quantum mechanics.

The effects of quantum mechanics present difficulties in electronic computers because unpredictable disruptions tend to occur at small scales and quantities, limiting the miniaturization of circuits. Although molecular transistors offer hope for tiny electrical circuits, linking these components together into usable circuits may prove exceptionally difficult. Yet as disruptive as quantum mechanics can be, it also holds the key to a promising new approach to computers that could be millions of times faster than today’s computers. The important quantum mechanical concepts include superposition and entanglement.

In quantum mechanics, it is impossible to measure with complete accuracy certain states of an object. For example, the position and momentum (the product of mass and velocity) of a particle cannot be known precisely at the same time. This principle is known as the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, named after German physicist Werner Heisenberg (1901-76). The reason for this uncertainty is that tiny particles such as atoms are so small that the act of measuring their position will cause them to jump or move, disrupting their momentum; similarly, measuring momentum will obscure their position. Neither state can be measured simultaneously. This uncertainty is notable in atoms and also holds true in principle for larger objects, but because of their greater mass, the uncertainty is much smaller and generally unnoticeable.

Prior to the act of measurement, the state of an atom or small particle may be any of a number of different values. Common sense suggests that the particle has a state of one value or another, but the laws of quantum mechanics tend to defy common sense. According to quantum mechanics, the particle is in a superposition of these state values – a combination of states – until the act of measurement. Physicists demonstrate this strange behavior by showing that a particle can interfere with itself, causing wavelike patterns on a screen. Interference often occurs when objects with different states combine, but a particle that interferes with itself suggests that it exists in a superposition of states.

Quantum mechanics was first developed in the 1920s. Prominent physicists such as Albert Einstein (1879-1955) criticized the strangeness of these concepts, but more conventional laws of physics had failed to describe the behavior of the atomic world. Austrian physicist Erwin Schrodinger (1887-1961) developed an equation in the 1920s that accurately described the behavior of quantum systems – systems of small particles subject to the concepts of quantum mechanics. These accurate predictions strongly support the theory.

The principle of superposition leads to the idea of a qubit – a quantum bit. (Qubit is generally pronounced the same as the word cubit.) A bit is normally a single item of information. But in quantum mechanics, an atom can be in a superposition of states – a qubit may be 1 or 0 or some combination of the two. In computer systems in use today, two bits can represent four different values – 00, 01, 10, and 11 – three bits can represent eight values, and in general, n bits can represent 2n values. But a single qubit can represent a huge number of values. A small number of qubits could do the work of a large number of bits.

Quantum computers could in principle perform a lot of tasks simultaneously, because the superposition of qubits would allow the computer to work on different problems at the same time, in parallel, similar to the multiple processors of supercomputers. But since the act of measurement disturbs the system – and any readout or printout would constitute a “measurement” – how could the operator obtain the result? The answer is entanglement. Under certain circumstances, the state of two atoms will become entangled; although the states are un- certain – and therefore in superposition – until measured, the states are related mathematically. Measurement of one atom’s state lets physicists calculate the state of the other atom. By entangling “read-out” atoms with computational atoms, the user could determine the results of a quantum computer’s calculation without disrupting the operation with a direct measurement, and thus avoid ruining the superposition.

Although strange and sometimes difficult, the ideas underlying quantum computers are scientifically plausible. But building a computer based on these ideas means working on atomic scales. A research organization that is well equipped for such tasks is the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As described in the sidebar above, NIST is an agency of the U.S. government devoted to improving scientific methods involved in measurement. NIST studies all kinds of measurement technology, including the difficult techniques associated with tiny particles such as atoms.

NIST researchers have been able to entangle atoms, one of the essential stages of quantum computing. Although particles must be held closely together for entanglement to occur, entangled particles can maintain their relationship over large distances if they happen to move apart. But factors such as stray electric or magnetic fields can disrupt or degrade the process. Dietrich Leibfried and his NIST colleagues have used lasers to hold and entangle two pairs of charged beryllium atoms in an electromagnetic trap – the charged atoms were held in place by electromagnetic forces. With this procedure, the entanglement did not suffer much from distortion, so the researchers were able to “purify” the entanglement and make it less prone to error. By measuring the states of one pair of the entangled atoms, NIST researchers deduced the states of the other pair. While the experiment in itself does not involve computation, it does demonstrate the feasibility of one of the essential ingredients of quantum computers. Rainer Reichle, Leibfried, and their colleagues published the paper, “Experimental Purification of Two- Atom Entanglement,” in Nature in 2006.

Building a computer based on quantum mechanics will not be easy. The NIST’s experiment was painstaking and technologically demanding due to the refined techniques, and linking all of these components into a computer will require extraordinary feats of computer science and engineering. But the possibility of boosting computational speeds by millions of times is strong motivation to continue making the effort.

If developed, quantum computers would have revolutionary effects on many aspects of society. For example, information such as credit card numbers and other personal information is kept private during Internet transactions by scrambling the information with methods that are too complex to be broken by today’s computers. A quantum computer, however, would be fast enough to ***** these schemes in a reasonable amount of time. The loss of security would entail a drastic revision in the way people and companies do business. These procedures are so important that they form an important area of research in computer science.

How to study? Where to study? Most college students have a big decision to make once classes are over for the day. Should they study in their dorm/apartment or make the trek back to the library? Should they eat before, during or after studying? Does that 45 minute studying then 15 minute break technique actually work? Add Facebook into the mix, and there are endless choices to make during your study period- Are you more like Harry Potter or Ron Weasley? Did your childhood friend finally grow into his ears? Who’s that cute co-ed who sits next to you in History? Study time just got a lot more interesting.

Personally, I can’t study in the library for more than an hour. You know those people who spend 5+ hours in there? I think their souls were ****** by Hour 2, and after that they are just empty shells bent over textbooks. Every night the janitors have to break out great big brooms to sweep up these shells of what used to be perfectly productive college students. Then they pick up the no-longer-owned textbooks and sell them back to the bookstore at outrageous prices (but that’s a topic for another article).

However, if I am at home (well, college home), I can study for hours on end at the comfort of my own computer desk. I can listen to music without head phones, I can run upstairs for a bowl of cereal in the middle of analyzing Descartes’ view on inequality, and I can sit in a comfy chair instead of those decades-old plastic horrors in the library. And my house doesn’t have that weird smell of plastic-covered books mixed with lots of people in varying degrees of cleanliness.

Also, those desks in the library are ridiculous. They have built in little cubbies that are useful in theory, and they do a great job of holding your books, but they also make me incredibly claustrophobic, and if I lean down too far into my work, my forehead hits the edge of the shelf. Not to mention the fact that the desk behind me is really behind me- about six inches away from my back. I need my space, and apparently the acres-large library isn’t the place to get it.

So back to my desk, my beloved computer desk. It has everything I need. There is enough space on the desk proper to spread out everything I’m working on at the moment- books, notes, laptop, etc. Then there is a shelf properly placed above my head that holds all of my books, papers and binders that I will be using later. There’s a little drawer perfect for holding writing utensils and other small necessities, and a hole provided to run my computer cord through so I can charge my laptop while I’m working (this is essential, especially for students. if you have to take notes in class on your laptop, you can’t have it dying in the middle of the lecture. No bueno.)

Now, I got lucky that this desk fits me perfectly. If you have a choice in desks, make sure it fits! Find the perfect, most comfortable-yet-not-sleep-inducing chair you can, then make sure your legs will fit under the desk with enough room to move around. Does anyone else have claustrophobic legs? I do. Anyway, the fit is essential, otherwise studying at your own computer desk will not be any more appealing than slowly decomposing in the library.

Decide how much space you need, as well. Do you tend to spread things out while you work or keep everything neatly organized? Do you need a drawer for file folders, but not a drawer for pens and pencils? How about a shelves- will they be used or just become a place to drop things without a home? Spaces like that are one of the quickest ways for a workspace to become cluttered and make you feel anxious while you’re trying to get things done. If you don’t have a specific need for shelving, it’s probably best to steer clear of it in order to keep things simple and calm. If you know you’re going to have some of those random things popping up though, drawers are magical little hiding places. I know, it’s a terrible organizational idea, but at least you don’t have to see it all the time.
