The first digital computer
Short for Atanasoff-Berry Computer, the ABC started being developed by Professor John Vincent Atanasoff and graduate student Cliff Berry in 1937 and continued to be developed until 1942 at the Iowa State College (now Iowa State University). On October 19, 1973, US Federal Judge Earl R. Larson signed his decision that the ENIAC patent by Eckert and Mauchly was invalid and named Atanasoff the inventor of the electronic digital computer.
The ENIAC was invented by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly at the University of Pennsylvania and began construction in 1943 and was not completed until 1946. It occupied about 1,800 square feet and used about 18,000 vacuum tubes, weighing almost 50 tons. Although the Judge ruled that the ABC computer was the first digital computer many still consider the ENIAC to be the first digital computer.
Because of the Judge ruling and because the case was never appealed like most we consider the ABC to be the first digital computer. However, because the ABC was never fully functional we consider the first functional digital computer to be the ENIAC.
The first stored program computer
The early British computer known as the EDSAC is considered to be the first stored program electronic computer. The computer performed its first calculation on May 6, 1949 and was the computer that ran the first graphical computer game
The first personal computer
In 1975 Ed Roberts coined the term personal computer when he introduced the Altair 8800. Although the first personal computer is considered to be the Kenback-1, which was first introduced for $750 in 1971. The computer relied on a series of switches for inputting data and output data by turning on and off a series of lights.
The Micral is considered the be the first commercial non-assembly computer. The computer used the Intel 8008 processor and sold for $1,750 in 1973.
The first workstation
Although never sold the first workstation is considered to be the Xerox Alto, introduced in 1974. The computer was revolutionary for its time and included a fully functional computer, display, and mouse. The computer operated like many computers today utilizing windows, menus and icons as an interface to its operating system.
The first PC (IBM compatible) computer
In 1953 IBM shipped its first electric computer, the 701. Later IBM introduced its first personal computer called the “IBM PC” in 1981. The computer was code named and still sometimes referred to as the “Acorn” and had a 8088 processor, 16 KB of memory, which was expandable to 256 and utilizing MS-DOS.
The first PC clone
The first PC clone was developed by Compaq, the “Compaq Portable” was release in March 1983 and was 100% compatible with IBM computers and software that ran on IBM computers.

“Why does my computer freeze?” I was wondering this question myself not too long ago. I would be using my computer like any other time. When all of a sudden my computer freezes up. I cannot access any programs. My mouse is not moving anywhere. I cannot use control/alt/delete. The only thing you can do is turn off your computer manually which is unsafe for your computer and causes you to lose any information were using at the time.
Anyone who has experienced this knows how big of a pain a computer freeze is. And it is even worse for those who like me had this happening to them on a regular basis. It just seems to come out of nowhere and can be a huge nuisance.
What I learned was that the problems were coming from my Windows registry. The registry is the most important and fragile area of your computer. It contains the information that runs all of your software and hardware. As you install, update, and delete programs the registry becomes filled with unwanted information.
This unwanted information causes two problems. First off it slows down your computer considerably. Like a traffic jam, your computer becomes congested with information and needs to be cleaned out to run fast again. The other problem is windows error messages and your computer freezing up. This useless and corrupted information on the registry counteracts with other programs causing serious problems.
The only way to fix this problem and prevent these kinds of computer freezes is to repair the Windows registry. Because it is such a fragile area it was recommended to use a program to clean up registry errors for me. I did so and my computer stopped freezing almost immediately. Even better it began to run like it was brand new!
If you are interested I have recommended the program I used below to solve this problem for me. With this program you will never have to wonder why does my computer freeze up ever again. Give it a try!

Computer forensics is still considered as a very new field. Currently, there is no undergraduate course majoring in computer forensics. However, as we search online, we will see that there are various computer forensic training providers which provide certification in this field. So, the question is who are the good ones?
It is noted that two of the most popular certifications are namely, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and the Certified Computer Examiner (CCE). To distinguish the two, see the followings:
1. Certification by Organization
- CISSP : International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, Inc. (ISC)
- CCE: International Society for Computer Examiners (ISFCE)
2. Objectives of Certification
- CISSP: Setting an international standard in the computer forensics industry with its CISSP examination
- CCE: Creating and maintaining high standards for computer examiners worldwide.
3. Requirements to obtain Certification
CISSP:
- At least 4 years of professional experience in information security or a college degree and 3 years experience
- Adhere to ISC’s code of ethics

CCE:
- At least 18 months of professional experience or documented training
- Adhere ISFCE’s to code of ethics
- Free of criminal records
- Pass an online examination
- Perform a forensic examination on at least three “test media”
4. Exam Structure
- CISSP: 6 hours is given to complete a 250-question examination
- CCE: Four part testing process:
Part 1 – One multiple choice examination which consist of at least 75 randomly generated questions to be completed in 45 minutes (2 attempts be given to achieve 80% or above)
Part 2 -4 – Three practical examination problems (forensic examination on 3 different media)
5. Passing Score
- CISSP: No fixed passing score. However, estimated passing score to be in the 70% to 80% range.
- CCE: 80% and above.
6. Continuing Professional Education Credits (CPE)
- CISSP: 120 hours education or training required every 3 years
- CCE: Required every 2 years on:
- 50 hours of education or training
- Work on at least three media
- Pass an online examination

Computer Forensics is the scientific study of computers or computer related data in relation to an investigation by a law enforcement agency for use in a court of law. While this technology may be as old as computers themselves, the advances in technology are constantly revising the science of computer forensics.
In the technological old days, computer forensics was mostly related to data dumps, printing out every keystroke that had been logged on a computer in a series of eight digits, all of them zeroes and ones. Literally cases of paper would be used for the printing of the materials. Systems analysts would then have to convert all of the data into hex and then translate the value into whatever the actual keystroke was. In this way, it was possible to go over all of the data and figure out at what point the computer and the corresponding program crashed. Like computers and technology, Computer forensics has evolved by leaps and bounds since those days of old.
While all computer language still ultimately boils down to ones and zeroes or binary and then hex, the means by which programs are created, run and utilized has changed drastically. Computer forensics has done well to keep up with the task at hand. Now hard drives can be wiped clean. However, without an unconditional format (and in rare cases, even with the unconditional switch) the data can still be retrieved. It takes an expert in computer forensics however. It takes someone who is familiar with the technology of the computer and the science of computer forensics to reconstruct all of the data that has been wiped off of the hard drive.
Computer forensics can be used to track emails, instant messaging and just about any other form of computer related communications. This can be necessary, especially in the world today. Computer forensics experts have even advanced the technology to the point that they can track data real time, or while it is actually being sent and received. This is a mind-numbing task when you think about the billions of communications going on around the globe at any given time, but the science of computer forensics is constantly advancing every bit as quickly or sometimes even faster than the technology they are responsible for investigating.

If you walk into the modern classroom, you will be hard pressed to find one that is not equipped with at least one computer, if not more. The computer is becoming a permanent fixture in the classroom, and some schools are even giving students laptops to use for school purposes. This is not surprising considering how computer driven our society is, but many parents and grandparents are surprised when they learn that computer games are being used in the classroom.
What purpose do computer games in the classroom serve? Are they simply there to fill time in place of board games or outdoor playing, or do they serve an educational purpose? While games are often used to fill those times when students need something entertaining to do, they do serve a very important purpose.
Children enjoy using the computer. In fact, long before most kids have thought about school they have been on a computer. Video games, both computerized and on the television, are also extremely popular with children. Children will play computer games, so why not use them to reinforce educational material while they play?
Computer games in the classroom do not replace the teacher’s role. They are used for practice and drill in most situations. Even though some subjects can be taught exclusively on the computer, such as typing, other subjects can be practiced and reinforced by playing computer games. Take spelling as an example. When students need to practice their spelling words, a simple computer game like hangman could be used to help them practice in a fun, relaxed manner.
Educational software can be used in the home as well as the school. You know that your kids love to play on the computer. Imagine giving them a game to play that is fun while at the same time works to strengthen their math skills. Both you and your children’s teacher will approve of that type of screen time!
Educational computer games can also help strengthen the thinking skills of students. Games that ask students to solve mysteries are a great way to develop critical thinking skills in a fun, supportive way. These types of games are the ones that kids can play and learn without realizing that they are learning something!
When using computer games in the classroom, it is important to monitor what your students are doing. For example, you may find that a student always plays the basic math game that he knows he can win. He doesn’t really need to practice in spelling, so you might encourage him to embark on a history mystery game instead. Whenever possible, computer games should be used to work on skills that a student needs to strengthen.
As with any computer use, playing computer games must be balanced with other learning. Most children would be willing to play games all day long. This, of course, is not a good way to educate students. On the other hand, never allowing a student to play on the computer could be harming him. He will be missing out on valuable practice time and a fun way to approach learning. The balance should allow students to play, while at the same time providing traditional instruction throughout the school day.
So the next time you walk into your child’s school and see her on the computer, don’t worry. She is being entertained, challenged and learning at the same time! Computer games play a vital role in a well-balanced classroom, so take some time to thank your teacher for allowing your kids some time to play!
