I want to transfer files from one computer to another via an ethernet router. How can I do this?

Connecting both computers to an ethernet DSL router gives me a local area network (LAN). I want to transfer files from the old Windows 98 SE computer to the new Windows XP computer. Does anyone know of a freeware program that will do this in a straightforward manner? Are there any special considerations?
More answers please – the first one needs more details, and the second one seems far too complicated.
