What can I do to fix my computer speakers?

All of the sudden they stopped working. It is a desk top computer. They are plugged in to the computer and to a power strip, they are turned on and the volume is turned all the way up but all I here is buzzing nothing else. When I check the computer it says under sounds and audio devices it says no audio device. I have tried to install them but it will not work. What can I do?
